Who we are

Activating players globally to protect and restore our planet whilst accelerating decarbonisation across the video games industry.

Founded in 2019 at the UN Climate Action Summit in New York, the initiative is facilitated by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and has more than 50 video games organisations members from around the world.

The initiative is designed to help those active in the video games industry to start their sustainability journey and to level up those already on it. Playing for the Planet provides resources, research and guidance in areas such as decarbonisation, target setting and storytelling within games to inspire environmental action and releases year-on-year reports on member progress.

Playing for the Planet organises the popular and commercially successful Green Game Jam, an annual challenge that invites video game studios with live games and existing audiences to create themed in-game content that engages players on  key environmental topics.

OUR OBJECTIVES

Activate

Inspiring players to help protect and restore our planet through our global Green Game Jam initiative.

Decarbonise

Facilitating collective effort within the industry to reduce the full scope of emissions and provide guidance to support the entire supply chain.

Collaborate

Building communities of collaboration with members, relevant national and international organizations and trade bodies, to extend the reach of sustainability themes through these entities.

2019

Playing for the Planet was launched at the UN Headquarters in New York during the UN Secretary-General's Climate Action Summit.

2020

The first Green Game Jam was launched and 11 mobile gaming studios came together to explore how to educate players on environmental topics.

2021

60% of Alliance members have made commitments to become net zero or carbon negative by 2030 and the Green Game Jam has tripled in size.

2022

Playing for the Planet's largest-ever survey reached 380,000 players across ten games, and found that roughly 80% of players want to see more green messaging in  games.

2023

The Green Game Jam ran for the 4th time with 40 games participating across mobile, console and PC.
